New Orleans: A Creative Reset After Wedding SeasonFalling Back in Love With PhotographyAfter a long wedding season, I travelled to New Orleans with one camera and a 35mm lens to reset creatively. Shooting street photography during Halloween, Second Lines and Día de los Muertos reminded me why I fell in love with photography — no timelines, no pressure, just atmosphere and storytelling. This is exactly how I approach destination weddings: capturing real moments in any location with a story-led eye. Why New Orleans Inspired My PhotographyHellllooooooo I've finally had enough time to sort these pics out! So this blog post is gonna be a bit different. Firstly I've not used AI to write all of it! So get over the spelling and grammar mistakes! Instead of weddings, I want to share my trip to New Orleans with you. I've been going on and on about it for a while now, and you might have seen all the beignet pictures I posted. But these pics are gonna show you a different side of my photography. I went with just one camera and one 35mm lens (I wish I'd also brought a zoom and a flash) and after a ridiculously busy wedding season I didn't shoot in manual and I loved it Going to New Orleans has been a dream of mine for a long time. It all started when my Mum read Interview With the Vampire and we watched the movie when I was about 13. I became obsessed. Being a teenager, I loved all things gothy, and I fell in love with Anne Rice and the city of New Orleans For the longest time, I wanted to visit during Mardi Gras. But as I grew older, crowds and lots of people just weren't my cup of tea except for weddings, of course. So we decided to go during my favourite time of year, Halloween. And let me tell you, it was absolutely amazing Halloween in New Orleans is like nothing else you've ever experienced. I saw the Queen herself twerking on a piano, hundreds of Ken dolls saying Hello Barbie, and even the devil dancing on Frenchmen Street and yes, I was sober We had so many incredible experiences, and it all feels like a dream now. I highly recommend going to New Orleans for Halloween. The food, the people, the music, everything was just amazing. Oh, how I wish I could go back Shooting Without Pressure After Wedding SeasonStepping out of my wedding photographer shoes on holiday in New Orleans felt like a breath of fresh air. I found myself immersed in the lively swirl of this Second Line parade. The colours, music, and dance moves took centre stage, offering a delightful departure from what I normally do at weddings. It was pure joy to capture and be part of this incredible experience. We had a former Mardi Gras and Second Line King show us round on the day and you can find more on how to book onto this here Airbnb experience link Halloween in New Orleans Street Photography and AtmosphereAs the sun came down we watched the Krewe of Mayahuel's Día de los Muertos celebration. Capturing the beauty of intricate costumes and vibrant decorations, my photos tell the tale of the lively festivities during Día de los Muertos. It was a visual immersion into the rich cultural tapestry of New Orleans, a testament to the captivating blend of tradition and celebration. I did not have my flash with me I cranked up the ISO and hoped for the best A bit like me letting AI write the top paragraph of this text This collection of photographs captures the spirited spectacle of New Orleans during Halloween, showcasing both the creativity of its people and the hauntingly adorned houses. I told you about the twerking already Second Lines and Día de los Muertos in New OrleansThe rest is a mixture of street photography, my obsession with shotgun houses, swamp tour and visiting Anne Rice's final resting place Falling Back in Love With PhotographyNew Orleans gave me exactly what I did not realise I needed: space to fall back in love with photography without pressure. I hope these photos give you a sense of the atmosphere I experienced because honestly, it all feels like a dream now Stepping away from weddings gave me space to reconnect with photography and the same approach applies to weddings I shoot too.
